Systems Consulting Services, Inc. (SCSI) was incorporated in Maryland in December, 1986 by Kenneth L. Wayman and Anne D. Ostrom. The company is headquartered in Ellicott City, Maryland. SCSI was originally established as a consulting firm and, from its inception and throughout most of 1988, continued to operate solely as a consulting business (adding such clients as Coca-Cola Enterprises, Martin Marietta, and Dun & Bradstreet.) In late 1988 however, the principals recognized that consulting revenues tend to fluctuate and began to shift the company's strategy to focus on software development, offering unique software products in niche markets. BIASTM Expanding its relationship with Dun & Bradstreet (D&B), the company developed its flagship software product: Business Information Analysis System (BIAS). BIAS was originally produced to allow mainframe and minicomputer access to D&B's information sources. For the first time, subscribers to D&B's services could electronically access D&B data from their office workstations. BIAS has since been modified to incorporate access to Experian (formerly TRW) Commercial and Consumer, TransUnion, Equifax, ChoicePoint, and ISO as well as other information sources. Due to customer requests, BIAS has evolved into a complete, modular, automated solution. BIAS users can now file retrieved bureau reports (information sources) in a BIAS customer-installed database, add outside financial information to the database, and analyze information employing user defined parameters. BIAS has become SCSI's main source of revenue and is currently being simplified to provide an "off the shelf" model to market to smaller businesses. In 1996 SCSI entered into a strategic relationship with ChoicePoint (now LexisNexis) in an effort to expand marketing and awareness of SCSI and BIAS. The relationship positions BIAS as the recommended on-line, customer resident software solution for access and management of data provided by LexisNexis to insurance companies. At the time, LexisNexis controled approximately 80% of the market and was recognized as the premier source of underwriting data for the Property and Casualty Insurance industry..
jBIASTM The BIAS product was developed using the state-of-the-art technologies in use at the time of its initial development (COBOL, CICS, SNA). SCSI recognized that over the years our users, and prospective users, were looking to move into implementations based on the newer, more modern technologies represented by the object-oriented, server-based environments. There was a wide recognition in the Information Technology world that these newer technologies provided an easier route to much desired World Wide Web solutions that were demanded by the market place. As a result, SCSI retrained our staff in these new technologies and set out to re-implement the BIAS data access and management functionality using the JAVA development tools. The result of this major undertaking is the SCSI product jBIAS; a product written in JAVA with XML and I/P. While jBIAS retains much of the BIAS data access (information sources) and management functionality, it is designed to be more of a utility, in that jBIAS does not include the administrative functions that were included in the BIAS product. Dropping this functionality, which was often replicated by our users and required duplicative effort, and moving to the new technologies has made it much easier to implement jBIAS when compared to BIAS. It is not unusual for our jBIAS customers to have jBIAS up and running in a test environment in a matter of hours. SCSI is committed to providing both software products and professional services to corporations that need access to various information sources for risk evaluation. The company is led by the uniqueness of its products and its understanding of how to integrate information into the customer's back office functions. SCSI has installed BIAS at more than 20 locations with over 11,000 licensed users. |
